Matriarch Blanket

The image is of an Indigenous woman with a blanket wrapped around her body. The blanket’s pattern is inspired by a blanket my father received at his most recent graduation at the University of Calgary where he received his Masters in Education. The blanket symbolizes the many significant events, accomplishments and celebrations Indigenous people are achieving despite the adversity we face.

In the pattern are images of children dancers, demonstrating the importance of encouraging children to embrace their culture and traditions. Each dancer is wearing specific regalia for the type of dance they are performing (traditional, jingle, etc).

By having the children displayed on the woman’s back, I hope to showcase both that children are our future and the sacrifice women and child-bearing people have by carrying our future on their backs.
